Unveiling the Art of Prototyping: Crafting the Perfect Flying Dress

Satin Hi Flying Dress (2019)

Embarking on the creation of a perfect flying dress involves a journey of expensive and time consuming prototyping – a process that becomes the canvas for valuable lessons and transformative discoveries. In this exploration, we delve into the intricate details of our prototyping experience, revealing the pivotal role it played in shaping the elegance and functionality of Hi Flying Dress.

Our initial foray into creating flying dresses involved experimenting with various fabrics and patterns. One crucial lesson emerged – satin and silk fabrics, although associated with luxury, proved to be impractical for flying dresses. The extended sewing time not only incurred additional costs but also posed challenges in delicacy and susceptibility to tears. Our goal was to craft dresses that endure, and the delicate nature of these fabrics, coupled with difficulty in cleaning, led us to pivot towards materials that balance longevity and ease of care. (We also had one chiffon floral print, see below!)

Lesson two in our prototyping journey underscored the necessity of stretch in creating versatile sizing. Fitting dresses to a spectrum of sizes proved challenging, and the solution lay in the stretch of our fabric. This innovation not only eliminated the complexity of sizing but also ensured a perfect fit for every wearer. With the stretch factor, Hi Flying Dress promises a contouring silhouette, mitigating the risk of wardrobe malfunctions and providing comfort with every photoshoot. Determining the perfect train length became a focal point of our prototyping endeavors. While many assume longer is always better in the realm of flying dresses, aerodynamics taught us otherwise. Experimenting with various lengths and shapes with the very active trade winds of Hawaii, we found the delicate balance between drama and functionality. The ideal train length emerged, ensuring the dress can sustain itself in flight without compromising on elegance.

The culmination of our prototyping journey reflects in the refined elegance and functionality of Hi Flying Dress. The iterative process allowed us to learn from fabric pitfalls, innovate with stretch, and master the art of aerodynamics. Each prototype contributed to the creation of a superior flying dress that stands as a testament to the importance of prototyping any product in the pursuit of perfection even if it’s a hefty investment.

The art of prototyping played a pivotal role in us crafting the perfect Hi Flying Dress. Lessons learned from fabric choices, the innovation of stretch, and the mastery of aerodynamics collectively shaped Hi Flying Dress into an exceptional product. Our commitment to excellence is not just a promise but a result of an intricate journey of prototyping, ensuring that every dress takes flight with elegance and durability.
